GUEST POST: Punch a Character by Chrys Fey

Sometimes when we read a book, we get so caught up in the story and the characters that we fall in love, get scared and angry. Many times I’ve wanted to punch characters: Bellatrix Lestrange for killing Dobby, the Lone Power (Young Wizard series), and various other killers/villains. And, yes, I’ve wanted to slug my own characters from time to time. In SEISMMIC CRIMES, there was one character—David Buckland aka Buck—who I wanted to punch a few times, or I wanted my characters to do the deed for me. As a matter of fact, Donovan, the hero of Seismic Crimes, does get to deliver a smack down. Still, I’d love to clock him at least once. Why? Let me give you a list.

Punch Buck Reasons:
1. He killed Ryan Goldwyn, Donovan’s brother.
2. He got away.
3. The grief he put Donovan through.
4. Haunting Donovan’s waking and sleeping life.
5. Almost ruining Beth and Donovan’s Christmas.
6. Thinking he can get away with murder forever.
7. Calling Beth some rather nasty names.
8. Getting away. AGAIN.
9. Causing Beth and Donovan physical pain.
10. For bringing Jackson Storm into their lives.

EXCERPT:
Less than six parking spaces away from Buck, he lifted his hand. The ear-piercing beep of a car unlocking made Beth jump. The sound also prompted Donovan to take out his stun gun. Either it was Donovan’s sudden movement, or Buck’s sixth sense, but he peered over his shoulder and looked directly at them. Recognition didn’t register on his face immediately. When it did, his eyes widened, and he ripped a gun out from behind his back.

Beth didn’t have to wait for him to fire to know it had bullets. She dove between a red SUV and a black truck as the first pops rang out. Keeping her head down, she teetered on her feet like a duck to the front of the SUV and planted her body behind the tire. Donovan crouched across the way beside a small Volkswagen. He still held the stun gun in his hand although it wouldn’t do them any good now.

Buck shot at them with abandon. The pings from bullets hitting metal echoed throughout the garage. Heart beating so hard and fast that it felt like it would explode, Beth peered left and right, searching for a safe route out of the garage. Even if she could make it to the next aisle over, Buck would no doubt follow with his gun blazing. By the sound of it, she figured it was a semi-automatic, and there was no telling how many magazines he had on him.

BLURB:
An Internal Affairs Investigator was murdered and his brother, Donovan Goldwyn, was framed. Now Donovan is desperate to prove his innocence. And the one person who can do that is the woman who saved him from a deadly hurricane—Beth Kennedy. From the moment their fates intertwined, passion consumed him. He wants her in his arms. More, he wants her by his side in his darkest moments.

Beth Kennedy may not know everything about Donovan, but she can’t deny what she feels for him. It’s her love for him that pushes her to do whatever she has to do to help him get justice, including putting herself in a criminal’s crosshairs.

When a tip reveals the killer's location, they travel to California, but then an earthquake of catastrophic proportions separates them. As aftershocks roll the land, Beth and Donovan have to endure dangerous conditions while trying to find their way back to one another. Will they reunite and find the killer, or will they lose everything?

  1. Thank you so much for having me on your blog today, Louise! And I'm sorry for being so late. Usually I'm right on time, but I wasn't near my computer today or my desk calendar, so I just now saw my note. Eek. Again, thank you so much for hosting me!

  3. Chrys & Louise, YES I've wanted to deck some characters. Even my own. Some to slap sense into, some to just knock silly for the sheer satisfaction of it. Thanks for a great blog entry.

    1. Hi, Donrazor. I think it's perfectly natural to want to punch certain characters from time to time. ;)
