Code 3: Finding Safety by V.E. Avance #Romantic #Suspense

V.E. Avance will be awarding a $20 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.

BLURB:
Leanna Dixon has had enough. She no longer wants to be a punching bag for her husband, Mark. Without a word, she packs her bag and flees from her hell.

Arriving in her new home, things begin to go wrong from the start. Through all the bad she meets James, an Austin Police Officer, who helps her pick up the pieces of her shattered life.

***

Mark Dixon rules his women with an iron fist. When he arrives home and finds his wife has left him, his anger begins to build to dangerous levels. He knows he needs to find her and teach her a lesson, just as his father had done to his mother.

Will Leanna survive or will she become another statistic?

Excerpt
Leanna looks up at James as one last tear escapes from the corner of her eye.  He brings his hand to her face and thumbs the tear away before bringing his lips down to hers.  His lips kiss hers gently before his tongue seeks entrance.  Her lips part and a gentle moan escapes her throat.  His kiss is tender and intoxicating.  Through the simple act alone, she feels safe and secure—wanted.

His hands travel up the side of her face.  His fingers entwine into her long, brown hair.  He gently pulls her hair, tilting her head back.  He breaks the kiss and gazes into her eyes.  His eyes burn with passion, passion he hasn’t felt in his entire life.  Leanna’s stomach clinches with excitement.  Without a word, he begins to trail kisses from her ear to her neck.  Leanna, uncontrollably, arches her back as James makes his way to her collar bone.

Without warning, he lifts her into his arms, her legs wrapping around his waist as he begins to ascend the staircase toward his bedroom.  With one, swift kick, the bedroom door squeaks on its hinges before clicking shut.  The floorboards creak and crack as he makes his way to the bed where he gently lays Leanna down.

Without warning, he lifts her into his arms, her legs wrapping around his waist as he begins to ascend the staircase toward his bedroom.  With one, swift kick, the bedroom door squeaks on its hinges before clicking shut.

  5. Wow. Simply... wow.
This book-- the author, really-- tackles a pretty heavy subject, and appears to do so rather gracefully. I read Ms. Avance's bio on Goodreads a few days ago, and again just now, and so I'm familiar with the bit of her personal story that she has shared. Having read this bio, I'm somehow much more comfortable with this book-- more at peace, really. Reading the Blurb, I was immediately worried that the story might veer into a "hero/rescuer"-type scenario, with not the slightest trace of female empowerment. (Disclosure: I finally got out of my Clinical Psych training/education/etc. just a couple of years ago.) But somehow... Somehow, I trust the author. I'd like to check out this book, and see how those dynamics play out.
Thank you for the blurb and excerpt, and for introducing me to this author as well as her work!
