EXCERPT

By the time he’d reached the door, Mary Kate was ready to grab one of the seasoned chicken legs and stuff it unceremoniously into her mouth. Roman had mounded mashed potatoes at one end of the glass pan, along with a generous portion of dressing, and he’d poured creamy chicken gravy all over it. Alongside four pieces of baked chicken, he’d spooned some creamed celery and several slices of apples simmered in butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. She inhaled deeply, closing her eyes.

“Did I pick stuff you liked?” Roman asked as he returned with their forks. “I was trying to get out of the kitchen and across the road before your sister realized what I was doing. She’s been, well . . . gawking at me a lot today.”

Mary Kate’s heart skipped a beat. Who would ever have imagined Roman Schwartz—the guy who milked huge black and white dairy cows every day—trying to escape her sister’s schemes? “Gloria wants to go out with you. But you didn’t hear that from me, understand.”

Roman handed her a fork and sat down in the swing again, close enough that they could eat from the glass pan he held between them. He seemed to be considering his response.

Mary Kate, however, wasted no time dipping up a big blob of potatoes and gravy. It was a mouthful of heaven. She closed her eyes over the combination of creaminess and warmth and smooth, well-seasoned chicken gravy. “Ohhh,” she murmured. “You have no idea how I was craving potatoes and gravy.”

Roman’s smile made his brown eyes sparkle. His dark blond waves shifted in the breeze as he took a forkful of the dressing. “I could eat this kind of food every single day and not get tired of it,” he remarked. “But I don’t know how to make potatoes and gravy and dressing—much less how to cook chicken the way my aunt does.”

“Clifford’s a little town a ways south of here,” Luke replied. He was relieved that Asa seemed to be regaining his memory despite his obvious discomfort. “Did you come up to Willow Ridge for the wedding festivities?”

Asa again appeared confused, but then his lean face settled into a scowl. “I wouldn’t liken my reason for being here to any sort of festivity,” he muttered. “And frankly, I’d rather not discuss it. If you’ll just let me get back on my horse—”

“Nope, can’t do that,” Andy insisted, holding Asa’s broad shoulders so he’d remain seated. “Since we don’t know how long you were out, I’m taking you to the emergency room for an MRI, in case you’ve got a concussion—”

“And your horse is in no shape to travel, either,” Luke chimed in. He led the tall black gelding a couple of yards and noticed it was favoring a leg. “How about if I take him over to my brother’s place? He’s our local farrier.”

The man seemed torn between concern for his horse and reluctance to stick around much longer, so Luke pointed in the general direction of Ben’s shop. “I’ll just lead him up the road a few blocks, and we’ll take it real slow. I’m Luke Hooley, by the way, and this is my aunt, Jerusalem Gingerich,” he added. “We’re glad she and Naz found you when they did. We’ll look after you and your horse until you’re both road ready, all right?”

“Gingerich, eh?” Asa murmured with a hint of suspicion.

“Jah, I married Vernon last year,” Jerusalem replied pertly. “He’s the bishop of Cedar Creek, ya know.”

“Ah.” Asa smoothed his black hair away from his face as he assessed them all. He winced again as he shifted his position. “Guess I’m not too fired up about riding, now that you mention it—especially if Midnight’s lame,” he murmured. “I sure have to wonder who raced his rig past us so close—and so fast—that I got thrown to the side of the road.”

“And I have to wonder who would’ve left you this way, too,” Luke added. “Even Plain boys racing down the back roads for the sport of it would have the decency to stop if they made a horse throw its rider.”

“Jah, you’d think so,” Andy agreed. “Asa, for safety’s sake, we’re going to put you on a stretcher and carry you to the wagon.”

As Luke helped the nurse get their visitor into the clinic wagon, he couldn’t help wondering about the real story behind this incident. Had someone from Willow Ridge run this fellow’s horse off the road? And why had Asa reacted so sourly to the name Gingerich? Families by that name lived all over this part of Missouri.

Maybe Detweiler was reacting to his pain and confusion—as any fellow would after hitting the ground so hard—yet Luke also found himself speculating about the stranger’s reasons for being here. The shadow that had passed over Asa’s face when he’d refused to answer that question suggested ulterior motives . . . hidden hostility.

Better keep your eye on this guy, his thoughts warned. Who knows what secrets he’s keeping?

EXCERPT:

Rosetta entered the kitchen, where her two sisters were rolling out the sweet dough she’d taken from the fridge before she’d gone out to milk.

“We’ve got to help Deborah and—and stand up for her,” she stated as she went to stand beside Mattie and Christine at the kitchen counter. “That hand-shaped bruise on her neck’s gotten me all riled up. Surely God does not intend for His daughters to suffer at the hands of His sons. It goes against everything Jesus taught us about loving one another—no matter what the men of our faith believe.”

Her sisters’ eyes widened, yet they nodded solemnly. With a sigh, Mattie said, “Jah, when I saw that bruise I right away figured Preacher Eli had lit into her, so she left home. He and Marvin were cut from the same bolt of cloth in many ways.”

“And with him being her father, there wasn’t anything Alma could do about it,” Christine pointed out sadly.

“That’s exactly the attitude we’ve got to stop!” Rosetta cried. “I can make soap from now until Kingdom Come and it won’t wash away the pain and humiliation after a woman—or a girl—gets smacked around. We can’t let those attitudes—those male beliefs—from Coldstream contaminate what we stand for at Promise Lodge. You of all people should be willing to end that cycle of violence, Mattie.”

Her eldest sister’s face fell. When Mattie looked the other way, Rosetta noted the bump in the bridge of her nose, which hadn’t been there before Marvin broke it. “I wish I knew how,” she said in a tremulous voice. “I’ve vowed never to marry again, so as not to subject myself to another heavy-handed man. But I guess that’s not much help for Deborah or the other gals who’ll be coming here, is it?”

“But how do we ask Deborah who grabbed her neck without upsetting her?” Christine said in a low voice. “Maybe she’ll open up to my girls when she feels settled in, or—”

“This is mighty solemn talk from three sisters who usually tickle my funny bone,” Preacher Amos remarked as he stepped into the kitchen. “And it sounds like a topic best discussed by all of the founders of the Promise Lodge colony.”

Rosetta’s throat went dry as she and her sisters exchanged a startled gaze. Amos Troyer was a skilled carpenter whose talents were badly needed as they repaired the lodge, the cabins, and the outbuildings—not to mention when it came time to build homes for the people who answered their ad in The Budget. No matter how vehemently opposed she and her sisters were to domestic violence, they couldn’t afford to alienate this man . . . not that he would leave just because their independent attitudes irritated him. Amos had invested all of his money in this tract of land, just as they had.

Rosetta prayed for the right words. “With all due respect for your position as a preacher,” she began softly, “we were saying how Deborah’s nasty bruise brings up all the reasons we left Coldstream—and Obadiah Chupp—behind. We don’t believe men should be allowed to—to abuse their women,” she went on in a rush, “or to condone such violence when other fellows carry it out in the name of order and discipline as the heads of their households.”

“If we’re going to let heavy-handed men have their way in our new colony,” Christine chimed in, “we might as well go back where we came from. I might’ve gotten a new barn after Willis died in that fire, but I got no justice. And I can’t watch Mattie remarry because the bishop insists on it, and then suffer at the hands of another mean-spirited husband while the church leaders support him and the women have to keep quiet about what he might be doing to her.”
